OUR PLACE IN THE WAGON

«When a wagon goes on the road, pushed by human arms, three are the reactions of the people. Someone shouts: “I support” and he goes and he put himself under the bars and he pushes too. Someone puts in the back, follows the wagon, supports the pullers and sometime he gives a boost.
Someone is indifferent in front of the wagon and of the trip of the wagon: he let it goes and he thinks to other businesses. That wagon is the Church».

Pope Albino Luciani, pope for some days, but tireless priest for many years, working for God and for the man, watched the Church with objectivity.
For us, baptized- and not only- the Church is the mother who supports us. It opens the doors of the Cathedrals and of the churches, of the simple buildings in the mission, but also the door of the forgiveness, of the reconciliation, of the safe.
But sometimes, we watch to this big universal reality, supported by Christ, with shortsighted eyes that can’t see the behavior that the same Church condemns, the contradictions between faith and life that are in the Christians. We are, in this case, the audience who lives in the borders, outside the ecclesial reality we remember sometimes: a wedding, a funeral, a baptize… and all ends here. We can be also the audience who goes out to share in some action helping the others. The Church entered in this way in our life, but we don’t know the sense, we act in alternation, giving to the others the responsibility.
I like the image of many Christians that with love put themselves “under the bars”, in a poor position, of work, sacrifice, sharing with other brothers and sisters, supported by the love for the Church of Christ.
Many beautiful images of the people who works, prays, and offers, both in the silence of the claustral life, and in the rhythm of the familiar, professional, community life, and in the difficulties of an existence, lived in mission or in the hospital. The target is the same: being more and more Church in the place we occupy in the world.
Before I finish, I ask myself and to you: “Am I pushing under the bars?”.
